Supporting Armed Forces

Leeds Teaching Hospital is proud to work closely with the Armed Forces; the Trust recognises the skills which can be transferable between the Military and the NHS. Leeds Teaching Hospitals have signed the Armed Forces Covenant which is a pledge that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives.

The Trust is proud to support our Armed Forces through a range of schemes and approaches. This page provides information on how we as a large employer will work with our people.

Defence Employer Recognition Scheme

The Trust was awarded the Gold Award by the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. This shows our ongoing commitment to our reservists and flexibility towards annual training commitments and mobilisation of reservist employees. This award is a credit to all our staff who use their Armed Forces experience for the benefit of our patients.

The Trust is now aiming to extend our support and is actively working with other local Trusts to support our Armed Forces.

Our Reservists

Leeds Teaching Hospitals employs staff who are members of the Reserve Forces and they recognise the valuable contribution that Reservists make to the UK Armed Forces, their communities and the civilian workplace. The Trust employs reservists, several of whom have been mobilised. The Reservists provide invaluable skills acquired through their military roles. The Trust has a dedicated procedure for Reservists providing additional paid leave of up to two weeks.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals fully supports all staff who are members of, are wishing to become members of, or who have previously served with the Armed Forces. We welcome job applications from the Armed Forces community, including military spouses, and are committed to providing a supportive environment throughout your career with us.

Step Into Health

Step into Health connects employers in the NHS to people from the Armed Forces community, by offering an access route into employment and career development opportunities. The programme recognises the transferable skills and cultural values that Armed Forces personnel develop when serving and how they are compatible with those required within NHS roles.

Leeds Teaching Hospital is delighted to have signed the Step into Health pledge. The Step into Health connects the Trust to talent from the Armed Forces community by offering access into employment and career development opportunities. This is done in a variety of ways, from holding information days and creating local relationships with armed forces representatives.

“By signing the pledge we recognise here at Leeds Teaching Hospitals the value and transferable skills serving armed forces personnel, veterans and military families bring to the trust. They are promised a warm welcome.”
