Child nursing involves everything from nursing a sick newborn to an adolescent road accident victim. In this role, you will work within the maternity unit or community, caring for women and their babies before, during and after pregnancy depending on the area. The Team Leader / Ward Manager focuses on the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care that aims at improving outcomes and experiences for women and babies. They will have the ability to demonstrate leadership and innovation in work contexts that are complex and unpredictable and require new strategic approaches. Other areas of responsibility include supporting junior staff with supervision and development and undertaking clinical staff appraisals. They also manage underperforming junior staff members and assess junior staff on core midwifery competencies.
You will be taking the lead role in event of any major incident within the unit and assisting in the orientation and support of new staff to the unit and developing new skills in response to emerging knowledge and techniques. Given the nature of this position, you will make complex judgements based on incomplete or limited information.
As a Specialist midwife, you will provide midwifery expertise and support to women and their families who are referred to a specific care pathway such as the Antenatal day unit and foetal assessment unit. In this role, you will be developing, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating specialist programmes of care using advanced clinical knowledge and clinical skills. You will analyse and interpret cardiotocographs (CTGs) and ultrasound scans to autonomously make decisions to transfer or discharge women according to their clinical need from the unit, refer women as appropriate to other members of the multi-disciplinary team and provide a clinical lead and role model to the midwifery team by delivering quality care as a highly developed expert practitioner and being responsible for the safe use and efficient management of equipment and supplies.
In essence, you will work with Matron to lead the development and implementation of clinical guidelines specific and midwifery practice, reflecting the local and Corporate Nursing business plans. You will also be required to liaise with Community Midwifery Services (as appropriate) to ensure seamless provision of care delivery.

You will also support the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) by being a focal point for advice to patients and carers and local resolution of complaints.

Within this role is a strong element of research and you may have overall responsibility for the coordination of research and development programmes as well as ensuring that current research findings are used by all staff to inform their practice. As a Nurse Consultant you will lead by example in developing highly innovative solutions to problems based on original research and inquiry.
The Nurse Consultant role blends a significant proportion of direct, higher level clinical care with education, research and management activities. You will be an expert practitioner, and source of expert advice to patients, carers and specialist nurses, to provide a strategic nursing lead in developing nursing practice within the specialty.
